December Birthday Friday

Better late than never I guess. It’s probably better I get them up before we have January’s Birthday Friday.

Here are the pictures from Birthday Friday in December.

Post Cards

I’m now teaching Language to a group of upper level students. Our schedules were re-arranged at the beginning of January (yeah yeah yeah, I’m behind on my blog). D3 is made up of students who were in C1, C2 and C3 previously. The only reason I’m teaching Language rather than Science is because I lost the coin toss with Tom. Oh well. It’s not so bad. I just sort of suck at teaching grammar.

The class is using the second grade Language book from Harcourt. The activity for today was to write a short post card to a friend. In it, the students will describe a visit to a place using the verbs “go”, “do” and “see” in the correct tense. That’s sort of boring, so I put my own spin on it. I wrote my friend’s address on the board and gave my kids a piece of paper with a post card on it. They addressed the post card to her and wrote a little bit about what they could do and see in Ulsan. I’ll put all of the postcards into an envelope and mail them off to Melanie to enjoy.

Yellow Submarine

One of my pop song for the next two months is “Yellow Submarine” by the Beatles. I’m using this with my lower level students because the words are pretty simple and it’s quite repetitive. I’m finding that the word “submarine” starts to sound extremely odd after going through the lyrics with the kids and then singing the song twice. But then again, maybe I’m just odd.

B1′s Plant Science Project

B1 studies science with me two days a week. In their book, there is an easy science experiment to investigate what living things need to survive. For the experiment, we have three plants. One you take care of normally. One you neglect to water. And one you put under a bag as well as neglecting to water. You observe the plants for two weeks to see how they fare.

I’m not sure if I’m the best person in the world to be running this experiment. I’ve been known to kill plants just by looking at them.  It was often joked when I was a pre-med student that once I became a doctor I would have to have artificial plants in my office.  Because, of course, people shouldn’t trust a doctor who can’t keep plants alive.   Regardless, we’ll see what happens.

I’ve decided that my students will make posters in small groups. I’ll probably have 4 groups of 3. I’ll be taking pictures of the plants on the days we study science. We’ll work together as a class to write the material for the posters. And I’ll provide the students with copies of the pictures as well as poster boards and class time to make the posters.

In the end, I hope to add an entire page to the blog with the results of their project.

We now return you…

…to your regularly scheduled theme.

Yes, I’ve gone back to Cutline. The holidays are over. So there isn’t a need for the Iceburgg theme anymore.

I’ll look for a new theme some time in the near future.

In the mean time, you might want to check out my new Linux blog. I created it so my poor readers here didn’t have to listen to my rantings ramblings about bending Linux to my will learning Linux.

My new schedule

For the curious among you, here’s how I spend my time at work.

The C and D classes were rearranged. Everyone in the C level aside from C5 moved up to a D level class. I lost some of my favorite kids (the old D2 class) but gained a terrific bunch of kids in D3. I also lost C3 when they moved (mostly) to D5. I gained Ivy once a week.
