Only in Korea :-)

Do you find rubber penguins that light up when you squeeze them. They’re made to go on your cell phone. But mine is going to sit on my desk at work.

The pink one is mine, and the blue one is a gift for my Linux tutor. I mean, what else does the good Linux geek need?

New Bed!

About six months ago, the springs in my mattress started to pop.  I let it go for a while because it really was no big deal.  I could deal with it by periodically turning the entire bed.  You have to understand it wasn’t a proper bed with a frame.  It essentially was a mattress and box spring in one with plastic legs screwed into the bottom.  It got to the point where I was sleeping in a large depression.  My back was really starting to kill me.  I had back surgery a few years ago and it doesn’t take a lot for it to start to ache.

So last week I finally asked for a new bed.  I figured since they don’t have to pay airfare for me to go home, they can afford a new bed for me.

My bed just came.  It’s a proper bed this time.  It’s totally beautiful.  I’m so happy.  I need to make it.  I have nice new bedding to go on it and everything.  I laid down on it to check it out and it’s perfect.  Not too hard and not too soft.  It’s just right, just like Golilock’s.

Yay!

Costco

Dear God…  Costco is a beautiful place.  I don’t know what the best part was.  The pizza with enough cheese on it for two additional slices or the bounty of delicious western food.

I did well.  I made it out spending only 65 dollars.  I bought a big block of cheese, a large package of chicken breasts, a big box of Honey Nut Cheerios, a big box of Nutri-Grain bars, some Jello and a case of Eggo Waffles that I split with another couple.

I realize I could have gotten the cheese and the chicken here in Ulsan.  But, it was a much better deal to get it at Costco.  Chicken here is about 5 dollars for a half kilogram package.  The package I bought in Costco was 10 dollars and weighed 1.5 kilograms.  Same deal with the cheese.

I had a really good time.  It was a long day, but definitely worth it.

Koreans in Space

Last evening the first Korean astronaut blasted off on board a Russian Soyuz space capsule.  Yi-So-yeon is the first Korean astronaut and the fourth Asian woman to visit space.

Poems by Kids

I teach a special writing class to a few C1 students. Their current unit is on poetry. Yesterday was a beautiful day. I didn’t want to sit inside. So I took the kids out onto the playground and told them to use their surroundings for inspiration. These are the results.

Making Predictions

I’ve reached the section on probability in C1′s math book. I hate probability. I stunk at it in college. And I stunk at it even more in grad school (grumble grumble, basis of statistics). Any how, so I’m now teaching probability to C1.

One little section was on making predictions about the whole based on a small sample. To demonstrate this, I went to the corner convenient store and bought a couple of bags of snacks. I then dumped them all in a big bag. The goal of the activity was to predict which snack type occurred most frequently and least frequently. I made a paper that allowed them to graph their sample. Then they had to write a sentences with their predictions. Only then could they eat their snacks. I also bought soda, so we had a bit of a snack party.
