Grand Park Picnic

Once again, our kindergarten took a trip to Grand Park.  The kids love to play there.  The teachers love the relaxed nature of our picnics.  There’s not much to say, so enjoy the pictures!!!

Mooga-dong

Moogadong is the area around Ulsan University.  It has a much different feeling than the areas around where I live.  It’s about a 15-20 minute cab ride from downtown (Samsangdong).  I spent the afternoon on what’s called “Babo Street” (literally translated it means silly/crazy four way intersection).

We found there is a Cold Stone Creamery there.  Ally was very excited to see they had cake batter icecream (*drool*).  We didn’t stop for any because Ally and Richard had icecream earlier in the day and I had some cheesecake at the coffee shop.

We ended up stopping at an outdoor restaurant type place to have a few drinks before heading home for BBQ (yummy Korean BBQ….)

I happened to have my camera with me, so I took some pictures for fun.  Enjoy!

Hot Seat!

I’m a believer in using games to educate and reward.  I have a class of first graders whose favorite game is a spelling bee.  Who would have thunk it?

Hot Seat! comes courtesy of a coworker.  It emphasizes speaking and vocabulary.  It’s a simple game that uses nothing more than a marker/chalk, a chair and a word list.

I’ve played this both as a team game with points and a just general activity.  Place a chair under the board.  Have one student sit in the chair so they can’t see the board.  Either the teacher or another student writes a word on the board.  The students not on the “hot seat”.  The rest of the students have to describe the word on the board for the other student to guess.

If you play in teams, put a limit on the time to give clues.  I disallow sign language no matter what.  Depending on the level of the class, the clues can be single words, phrases or full sentences.  Sometimes it’s fun for higher level classes to be limited to one word at a time because they have to work cooperatively to give the clues.

When I teach domain specific knowledge, such as science, I use the chapter or unit vocabulary as the word list.

If you try it with your students, let me know how it goes!

Ivory Visits Newton Class

Newton class is a group of 6 year olds.  I teach math and science to them.  Over the last few months in science, we’ve been talking about the five senses.  The unit finishes with the sense of touch.  I mentioned as we were talking about soft and rough that my cat Ivory is very soft.  The kids wanted me to bring Ivory in.  I checked with their charge teacher and got her blessing.  All last week was rainy so I didn’t want to talk Ivory out.  But today was lovely.  It helps that I live directly next door to the school.  So on my break right before I taught Newton, I ran upstairs and brought Ivory down.

The kids were so excited.  Even so, they behaved wonderfully.  I was somewhat worried that they would be rough with Ivory, but they were very gentle.  I held Ivory while they came up and stroked her.  Tina, their charge teacher, was kind enough to take pictures.

Enjoy!

Happy 2010

I’d like to wish everyone a very happy New Year.  As we big 2009 goodbye, I hope everyone has had a productive year.  I hope the same is true for 2010.

Yes I Am

What language am I?  Well.  What can I say?

Blogthings is good for a laugh.  That’s about it.

You Are English

You are easy to understand, and most people are able to communicate easily with you. You say things simply and clearly.

You are flexible and not too hung up on rules or customs. You can go with the flow and change as needed.

You can speak simply or you can exercise your vast vocabulary. You customize you communication style to whatever setting you’re in.

You are a very cosmopolitan and worldly person. If you like something from halfway around the world, you try to figure out a way to incorporate it into your life.

Pepero Day 2009

Peperos Happy Pepero Day to all!

Pepero Day is celebrated here in South Korea by giving people “Peperos” (빼빼로). They are long skinny cookies sticks dipped in chocolate. Very yummy! If you’re a teacher, you usually end up with tons of them. Personally, I only eat Peperos on Pepero Day. By the time the tenth student offers them to you, you get pretty sick of them. Today, I actually got a hand dipped one. Not the bulk things that Lotte makes. It was dipped in chocolate with chocolate sprinkles.  Boy was it good.  So much better than the bulk ones.  The best bulk ones are the ones that come in the green box.  They have almonds in the chocolate.

I have a pile of these things sitting on my desk. I’ll probably throw some in the box I send home with Christmas gifts. The rest I’ll give out as treats to the kids, in moderation of course. The vast majority of my kids today were way high on sugar.

The legend is that Pepero Day started in Busan. A bunch of girls started exchanging the snack and wishing each other that they would become as tall and thin as a Pepero. Nice legend. But more likely it was started by the folks at Lotte who make Peperos. It’s a true Korean “Hallmark” holiday.

Pepero Day is always celebrated on November 11th. Why that day? When you write the date at 11/11, it looks like four Peperos standing side by side.

See Wikipedia (who else?) for more information and links.
