Only in Korea :-)

Do you find rubber penguins that light up when you squeeze them. They’re made to go on your cell phone. But mine is going to sit on my desk at work.

The pink one is mine, and the blue one is a gift for my Linux tutor. I mean, what else does the good Linux geek need?

New Bed!

About six months ago, the springs in my mattress started to pop.  I let it go for a while because it really was no big deal.  I could deal with it by periodically turning the entire bed.  You have to understand it wasn’t a proper bed with a frame.  It essentially was a mattress and box spring in one with plastic legs screwed into the bottom.  It got to the point where I was sleeping in a large depression.  My back was really starting to kill me.  I had back surgery a few years ago and it doesn’t take a lot for it to start to ache.

So last week I finally asked for a new bed.  I figured since they don’t have to pay airfare for me to go home, they can afford a new bed for me.

My bed just came.  It’s a proper bed this time.  It’s totally beautiful.  I’m so happy.  I need to make it.  I have nice new bedding to go on it and everything.  I laid down on it to check it out and it’s perfect.  Not too hard and not too soft.  It’s just right, just like Golilock’s.

Yay!

Costco

Dear God…  Costco is a beautiful place.  I don’t know what the best part was.  The pizza with enough cheese on it for two additional slices or the bounty of delicious western food.

I did well.  I made it out spending only 65 dollars.  I bought a big block of cheese, a large package of chicken breasts, a big box of Honey Nut Cheerios, a big box of Nutri-Grain bars, some Jello and a case of Eggo Waffles that I split with another couple.

I realize I could have gotten the cheese and the chicken here in Ulsan.  But, it was a much better deal to get it at Costco.  Chicken here is about 5 dollars for a half kilogram package.  The package I bought in Costco was 10 dollars and weighed 1.5 kilograms.  Same deal with the cheese.

I had a really good time.  It was a long day, but definitely worth it.

Sparkler

I have a pet now. This past weekend I bought a little guinea pig from Lotte Mart. She’s a little girl weighing no more than a pound. I’ve named her Sparkler, but she goes by Sparks or Sparkie for short.

Sparks is doing well. She goes nuts when I drop oranges into her cage. I’ll have to appropriate some more from work tomorrow (they put out huge bowls of them in one of the work rooms).

The two of us had a nice chat earlier this evening. I worked out some stuff that was running through my head. Even if she is just a little guinea pig, she’s a good listener. And sometimes that’s all we need.

And I also got some pictures.

Snow?

We had our first (and probably only) snow fall of the year the other day. The kids found it quite amusing. We don’t get much snow here in the southern part of South Korea. It’s a bit strange going through a winter without snow. The last time that happened I was a grad student in Austin, Texas (although we did have our share of ice storms).

Just for fun, I captured a few pictures of the “snow” (and I use the term loosely) from my apartment balcony.

Snow?

Snow?

Snow?

As you can see, it didn’t stick to the ground at all and only a little to the roof.

We now return you…

…to your regularly scheduled theme.

Yes, I’ve gone back to Cutline. The holidays are over. So there isn’t a need for the Iceburgg theme anymore.

I’ll look for a new theme some time in the near future.

In the mean time, you might want to check out my new Linux blog. I created it so my poor readers here didn’t have to listen to my rantings ramblings about bending Linux to my will learning Linux.
