I can’t believe I dressed up for Halloween. Well, technically I did last year. But my idea of a costume was a denim skirt, a tee-shirt and bows in my hair. Add in pink cheeks and freckles, and I was a baby doll.
This year, I went all out (for me at least). I’m a sad, sad clown. I bought a long, curly, purple wig. I bought a iridescent blue cowboy hat. I bought a big, red, sequined bow tie. And I bought some printed origami paper. With the paper, I cut it into various free form shapes to make “patches”. I used a black marker to make little dashes on the edges of the paper for the “stitches”. I then used double sided tape to stick the patches to a pair of jeans, a shirt and the hat. I also put the bow tie around the hat when I realized it was going to be too warm to wear a turtleneck to school. I must say, I absolutely love the hat. It’s totally adorable.

I’ve been singing “The Wheels on the Bus” with my Sha Sha kids for the last week. They love the song. I’m coming to hate it. The nice thing about it is that it is repetitive (makes it easier for them to learn the words) and it is easy to act out (keeps them engaged, sort of).
Nine wonderful days of freedom from small people. I don’t have to leave the comfort of my apartment unless I want to. Well, not quite true. I need to go to the post office and mail some stuff, do the shopping and get a bracelet fixed (one of my 5 year olds broke my Medic Alert bracelet accidentally).
I have a tiny bit of work to do for school. Not much. I have a test I need to type. And I need to make a CD of children’s songs. Neither require any brain work. I wrote the test last week and I just need to search my hard drive for the tracks I need to burn.
I definitely need a break. We’ve been going hard for the last six months. We had English Village last week and Open House a few weeks before that. We also just finished portfolios. When we get back, we need to start thinking about Kindergarten Presentations.

Take a look at this test from 1895. Remember when grandparents and great-grandparents stated that they only had an 8th grade education? Well, check this out. Could any of us have passed the 8th grade in 1895? This is the eighth-grade final exam from 1895 in Salina, Kansas, USA. It was taken from the original document on file at the Smokey Valley Genealogical Society and Library in Salina, KS, and reprinted by the Salina Journal. Notice that the exam takes FIVE HOURS to complete. Gives the saying “he only had an 8th grade education” a whole new meaning.

Grammar (Time, one hour)
1. Give nine rules for the use of capital letters.
2. Name the parts of speech and define those that have no modifications.
3. Define verse, stanza and paragraph.
4. What are the principal parts of a verb? Give principal parts of “lie”, “play”, and “run.”
5. Define case; illustrate each case.
6. What is punctuation? Give rules for principal marks of punctuation.
